Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University holds a scientific course on lasers and their medical applications

The Department of Vision Screening Techniques at the College of Health and Medical Technologies/Kufa, one of the formations of Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University, in cooperation with the Sustainable Development and Women’s Affairs Units, held a scientific course entitled Lasers and its Medical Applications, in which a group of the department’s teachers lectured.

The course aimed to introduce the use of lasers in the medical field, such as laser eye operations, which is one of the surgical techniques used to correct vision in people suffering from severe myopia, or mild degrees of farsightedness. Robotic lamellar keratoplasty is one of the traditional methods of surgery, but there are currently many laser operations for the eyes that are more accurate.
The course began with an introduction to the laser and the history of its appearance, until it began to take a wide field of use in medical fields, and of its types. Solid state Laser (Solid state Laser), liquid state laser (Dye Laser), gas state laser ( Gas Laser), plasma state laser ( Plasma Laser).
The course also touched on modern methods in the medical uses of lasers, such as its use in eye surgery, orthopedics, vision correction, general surgery, physiotherapy and in pathological analyzes.
The potential risks and the necessary requirements in medical laser applications, such as its use as a precision surgical instrument, were also clarified, increasing the risk caused by the lack of automation of this tool, which requires a high level of training for those who use this technique because its cost is high for surgical or non-surgical operation, and also requires the provision of specialized devices and equipment.
